I've said it before, but I will say it again, my students have been doing an incredible job at counting by tens. Their number sense and understanding of the relationship between tens and ones is awesome! It will help greatly when we start adding two-digit numbers.
This week we are undergoing an exploratory unit called "The Masloppy Family". This fictional family is sloppy and unorganized so they inventory their house. They inspired us to inventory our school supplies. The first day students inventoried in small groups without any prompting by me. The second day we talked about how bundling our supplies might help us keep track of our number. Every group chose to bundle by ten.
When we were done, each group presented their number and we discussed it. Every single group did a great job counting as well as explaining their thinking.
