Stick with us this year to watch us grow and see us learn!
The students are learning how to organize data by tallying, graphing, and writing about it. We asked survey questions then collected data on our classmates' responses. "We did servays and said. Do you wont to be a pilgrom child." -Isabelle It was sad to see our Thankful Tree empty in the hallway, but it was pretty cool to let each child make their own thankful tree to take home with them.

Our thankfulness tree has SO many leaves, and we are becoming experts at seeing all the things we have to be thankful for.
Some of my favorites (in that they are creative) are: - Toilet paper - Electricity - Nature - Toothbrushes - Rainbows - Sunrises - Perfume - Military - BBQ This activity has shown me just how insightful and thoughtful this group of students is. Without a doubt they are something that I am thankful for this Thanksgiving! I have been so impressed by my mathematicians lately. They have really been grasping the idea of tens and ones, which will be crucial to their understanding of almost all math in the future. This week we have been lucky to have a pre-service teacher from Columbia College join us. She taught the students how to use their tens sticks and ones cubes. As she was teaching, I got to sit back, take a few pictures, and marvel at how much these students have grown in the past 3 months. What do 43 bags of Halloween candy have to do with Veterans Day? It is proof of my students' giving hearts and willingness to share.
Today I got to deliver goody bags and Thank You cards to 43 deserving veterans. They were delighted to hear of the respect they have of our sweet first graders at Two Mile. Cheers to giving 6 years-olds and selfless servicemen and servicewomen! Happy Veterans Day! It's funny thinking about favorite holidays. There are certain holidays that I just love to celebrate, but there are other holidays that I love to celebrate and I LOVE to teach. Thanksgiving is one of those holidays. I do teach the brief history of Thanksgiving throughout the month, but more so, I give the students opportunities to show appreciation as often as possible. This is something that many students already do and already do well. I love growing their scope of gratitude and their understanding of just how fortunate we are.
Some of my favorite "thankful leaves" that students have filled out so far are: - Music - School - Family - Mrs. Ortis and her weekly help in our classroom - Books - Health - Gymnastics - Electricity - Ipads *Disclaimer: I took this photo a few days ago. You should see how many thankful leaves our tree has now! |
