I love integrating technology into subjects that I am already teaching. One major skill we learn in first grade for both reading and writing is called retelling. This means the students hear or read a book then retell the major events of the story.
When Dr. Ensor approached me about trying out a technology project that would allow the kids to write their own book based off a book I had read, I jumped at the chance!
This project started by reading a book about pumpkins. The book taught us how pumpkins grow. We read the book then discussed what the major events were. After that we used an app on the ipads called Book Creator to make our own books. Just as we do in writing class, the students wrote what happened first, next, then, and last. Once the text of the book was done, students illustrated their book. The students did an incredible job using the app effectively, typing in their thoughts, and being creative.
Our books will hit bookshelves near you on Friday, October 23rd a.k.a. Grandparent's Day.
