Today a friend came to visit. She read the Polar Express to the class (she also brought them donuts, but that was an unexpected, unplanned surprise!). After we read the story, we figured out the most important details from the beginning, the middle, and the end. This is a tough skills for small students. They often like to add details that they liked the most. For example, they had hot chocolate in the beginning. While they did have hot chocolate on the train, it is not one of those most important details. This was really good practice for us as readers!
This afternoon the class is going to put the story into a story map where they will need to write about the characters, setting, problem and solution of the story. We will also be putting the movie and book into a Venn diagram at the end of the week.
Check back as the week goes on because have many more fun* activities planned!
